Southbank Theatre

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s Southbank Arts Precinct, Southbank Theatre houses The SumnerThe LawlerScript Bar & Bistro and several function rooms which are available for hire. From 2014, Sydney Dance Company will make its debut performing at the Sumner at Southbank Theatre and is proud to call this theatre our new Melbourne home.

The Southbank Theatre Box Office is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until the commencement of the evening performance productions held at Southbank Theatre and 2 hours prior to performances on Sundays and public holidays. If there is no evening performance at Southbank Theatre the Box Office will close at 5pm.


Street parking is very limited near the theatres, but there are many secure car parks within walking distance of both venues Southbank Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne.

Disable Parking
There are four disabled parking spaces along Dodds Street, each with a four hour restriction.

Southbank Theatre is within easy distance of Flinders Street Station. After exiting the station simply walk south down St Kilda Road (away from the CBD), or catch a south-bound tram from the Flinders Street Station/Federation Square tram stop.

For routes travelling up and down St Kilda Road (numbers 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, 72) you can get off at the Arts Centre stop and walk to Southbank Theatre. Route 1 to South Melbourne Beach goes down Southbank Boulevard, right past Southbank Theatre.

Script Bar and Bistro
Within the Theatre building, Script Bar and Bistro offers predominantly Italian-style menu and uses seasonal produce, sourced locally where possible, to create approachable dishes showcasing the best Victoria has to offer.

Southbank Theatre Foyer Bars

Perfect for a light refreshment, the Foyer Bars offer a broad selection of Victorian food and confectionery and showcase local wine and beer brewers.

The Deck Restaurant
Located in the Southgate Complex, The Deck offers both a la carte dining and delicious set menus and affords a spectacular view over the Yarra River.

There are a variety of restaurants, cafes and takeaway outlets within the Southgate Complex, located on the banks of the Yarra River.

Wheelchair and mobility access
Facilities for wheelchair access and seating that allows more room for the use of mobility aids are available in all theatres. Please make your requirements known when booking.

Captioning and FM hearing system
An FM hearing system is available for all performances in the Sumner, Playhouse and Fairfax Studio at no charge upon presentation of identification to theatre ushers. Audience members receive either a headset or neck loop enabling use of a hearing aid via the T-switch.

Companion Cards
The Theatre offers Companion Card holders a free ticket for their companion to attend the performance and assist with their access needs.
